In The First King of Shannara, we learn of Jerle Shannara, who must join forces with the Druid Bremen to forge a talisman against the power-hungry and destructive Brona.
Later, Bremen's adopted son Allanon comes to Jerle's descendents Shea and Flick Ohmsford to tell them they must use that same talisman, The Sword of Shannara, against Brona's angry shade who attempts to wreak havoc on the Four Lands again.
Shea's grandson, Wil, teams up with Amberle and must use the Elfstone talismans to save the magical Ellcrys, or an onslaught of demons will be imminent in The Elfstones of Shannara.
Use of these elfstones has affected Wil's descendents, however, for Brin and Jair Ohmsford have the use of their own inner magic, the Wishsong. Once again an evil threatens the Four Lands, and these two, at the request of Allanon, must use their magics to find its source and overcome it in The Wishsong of Shananra.
Many years later, another evil resurfaces in the form of the evil, wraith-like, parasitic Shadowen. In The Scions of Shannara, the remaining Shannara heirs (Walker Boh, Wren Ohmsford, and Par Ohmsford) are summoned to hear of the quests they must fulfill: Walker to bring back the Druids, Wren to bring back the Elves, and Par to find the Sword of Shannara. The Druid of Shannara, tells of Walker's adventures in search of the Black Elfstone with the assasain Pe Ell and Quickening, powerful daughter of the King of the Silver River. The Elf Queen of Shannara recounts Wren's attempt to find and bring back the elves, while Par's quest is described in The Talismans of Shannara, and the nature of the Shadowen is also revealed.
