Kalia Karelan Sedai is 29, with medium-length blonde hair and light blue eyes. She is slightly more than average height (5' 7") and is of the Violet Ajah. She is almost always found practicing with her Warder, Makris, who happens to be her twin brother (she likes the same weapons he does, two oriental short swords), studying in the library, talking with Ariakas, or making ter'angreal, angreal, or even sa'angreal.
Kalia lived in Shol Arbela before coming to the Tower at 17. Her parents were killed in an attack from the Blight when she was 10 and she swore a solemn oath to avenge their deaths. She wanted to become a soldier and fight the monsters that constantly raided villiages, but was turned down for being a girl. Her brother, however, did and she followed him to battle. On the first fight they encountered, three myrdraal appeared and it looked like Makris' party was going to lose. Her rage was such at the thought of her brother dying and another innocent villiage destroyed that she unknowingly channeled saidar, creating huge lightning bolts that fried the myrdraal where they stood, but she did not stop there, she then marched off into the Blight (followed by Makris) still embracing the True Source and began destroying anything that moved, nearly stilling (or killing) herself. An Aes Sedai travelling through Arafel at the time (Red Ajah) heard of this from the other soldiers and found Kalia and brought her to the Tower. Along the way that Red taught Kalia of her Ajah and Kalia immediately decided to become Red after training. Makris went with her and eventually told her that he had found that he could channel saidin, so she bonded him (going against her Ajah in two ways). In the breaking of the Tower, Kalia was one of the few Reds who stood aside and did not fight. (Kalia despised both Elaida and Siuan). When Egwene al'Vere became Amyrlin, Kalia challenged her to battle with the Power (she refused to have another Amyrlin whom she could defeat easily). Egwene accepted and Kalia was totally unprepared for Egwene's awesome power and was beaten rather badly. This caused Kalia to respect the new Amyrlin Seat completely, for both her youth and choice of Ajah (Green, the Battle Ajah). She chose to become Violet when the Red Ajah disbanded, instead of Green, because she had just found a most amazing ter'angreal, one thats' only purpose was to negate the effects of the Oath Rod.
Kalia's main strength is in the combination of Water and Air, thus her favorite attack is lightning (lightning is static electricity formed through nitrogen (Air) and water vapour (Water)). She is incredibly strong with the Power in general, though not as much as Egwene, Nynaeve, or Elayne. She has a strange block similar to the one Nynaeve had, where she can channel normally at any given time (her power is still great here), but when she is angry, she could bring down the walls of Tar Valon. This is because when she first channeled she was in such a rage that she channeled so much of the True Source that her mind was almost burned to cinders and has shocks of this still that will not Heal, and thus refuses to channel that much unless in the same emotional state (furious). This is a bit of a problem for Kalia (unlike Nynaeve, who has a temper that could make the Dark One jealous) because she rarely ever gets angered by anything. Her brothers' power is uncertain because, well, it's not like he goes around practicing his talent (well, until now, that is, but he will not leave his sister to go and train).
Because of the ter'angreal she found, Kalia can lie, create weapons of the Power, and use the Power itself as a weapon. She never forgot her vow of vengeance against the Dark One and its' minions, and remembered how the myrdraal's shadow-wrought blade cut through the best of steel, and how a small cut from it killed. In her practical mind, she thought 'why can we not make weapons to equal those? We will surely lose Tar'mon Gaidon in the face of things like that. The Creator gave us the Power for a reason.' and so she founded the Sisters of the Light (oh, if the Whitcloaks found about that one...) a group of Aes Sedai who shared her beliefs and are dedicated to making weapons of the Power (they can because of the ter'angreal she found). It is a secret group (obviously) and is currently 67 strong and its numbers grow every day. Nearly half the Violet Ajah are part of it.
Kalia and Makris are very close, she is the only one he trusts with the knowledge that he can channel, and stand out in the Tower because of their strange Bonding. Both are very well liked in the Tower, though (and well known) and have no enimies there. This is because both are polite and helpful in the extreme and have almost un-Aes Sedai-ish or un-Warder-ish cheerfulness, though both have apparent serious sides and are greatly respected. Kalia is even friends with Ariakas (best friends, actually) and talks with her often. She alone knows the horrible story of Ariakas' history... Though she has been sworn to secrecy about it.
Kalia is one of the sitters for the Violet Ajah despite her youth, and has many revolutionary ideas for the Aes Sedai. First, the weapons wrought of the Power. The theory that channeling is hereditary (completely) and that all Aes Sedai should bring their family to the Tower to be tested for this. And she has thought of other Ajahs, the Orange, Black (NOT followers of the Dark One), Silver, Gold, a new purpose for the Red, and many others.)
